**Thank you to Virtue Labs for providing me with full and travel size of Refresh Dry Shampoo for today’s post. All opinions are my own.**

I have always read articles on how to stop washing your hair so much and thought, yeah right…not with my hair. My hair, or I guess my scalp, has always been more on the oily side. How does a person stop washing their hair all the time and still look good? I have friends and relatives that tell me they only wash a couple times a week. I just dismissed it as something I’d never be able to do. And I didn’t do it, until recently when I discovered the BEST dry shampoo. Keep reading for my tips on how you can do it, too!

Why I Stopped Washing My Hair So Much

You may have noticed in some of my Instagram photos that I chopped off about 9 inches of my hair. While doing so, I had an enlightening conversation with my stylist:

Stylist: So, are you washing your hair A LOT?

Me: (sheepishly) Ummmm…Is everyday considered a lot?

Stylist: (eyes bug out) Yes! There’s no need. Your hair is really clean and very shiny but you have a ton of breakage. You can probably get away with once every few days.

Once. Every. Few. Days. Clearly this guy has no idea what my hair goes through. I style it everyday and also workout where I sweat (and sweat, and sweat, and sweat). Plus not to mention the fact that my scalp is oily to begin with. The thought of not washing my hair after all that pretty much repulsed me. But my stylist pointed out some things that I’d never considered and he shared with me how to stop washing my hair so much and still look good.

Warm and Cold Water Rinse

To stop washing your hair so much, start in the shower. Rinse your hair and scalp with warm water first. This cleanses the scalp of dirt, oil, sweat, and styling products without stripping hair of natural oils that it actually needs. The warm water also helps to open the hair shaft and follicle to help with impurity removal.

After a warm water rinse, I apply a small amount of Virtue Recovery Conditioner to the ends of my hair only.

Follow with a cold water rinse to seal the hair shaft and retain its moisture. You’ll also seal in your pores, preventing dirt and impurities from getting into them in the first place. If you have a hand-held shower attachment, a cold water rinse is a little easier to handle.

Invest in a Great Dry Shampoo

To stop washing my hair so much and still look good, I rely on Refresh Dry Shampoo from Virtue. You guys know how much I love their haircare products (read my post, Repairing Winter-Damaged Hair) so I was really excited when they created a dry shampoo.

I’ve tried a lot of dry shampoos and have never been completely satisfied. Is it just me, or do they do the complete opposite of what they promise? I always felt like I was adding more residue to my hair rather than refreshing it. “Dry” shampoo? More like sticky shampoo.

Why I Love Virtue Refresh Dry Shampoo

With Virtue Refresh Dry Shampoo, I can finally stop washing my hair so much and still look good. I LOVE this stuff! First of all, it smells amazing. It actually smells clean with a light citrus and floral blend, as if my hair has been freshly shampooed. There’s absolutely no chemical smell and it’s completely invisible.

Like all of Virtue’s products, their Refresh Dry Shampoo is free of sulfates, parabens, phthalates, colors, and dyes. It’s also gluten free and cruelty free.

Two ingredients I found really interesting are Tapioca Starch, A natural, non-GMO starch with exceptional oil absorption properties” and Kaolin Clay, “A highly refined, pure clay that helps remove impurities from hair.” I’m familiar with tapioca starch as a cooking ingredient due to its benefits of being gluten and wheat free. But kaolin clay was new to me. It’s a naturally occurring clay found in the soil and has many detoxifying strengths for skin and hair. I love that Virtue’s core values include providing hair care solutions that are delivered ethically and responsibly, with naturally sourced ingredients you can actually pronounce.

They also provide all their products in travel size, so you never have to go without your favorites. Virtue’s TSA approved size of under 3-ounces means I can still avoid checking my bag.

How to Keep Working Out and Still Look Good

If you exercise regularly like I do, you’re probably still wondering how to stop washing your hair so much and still look good. I had an epiphany when my stylist pointed out that sweat is basically just salt and water leaving the body. So a warm water wash and cold water rinse is all that’s really needed to cleanse the sweat from your scalp and hair. And trust me, if anyone’s hair can put this theory to the test it’s mine.

Other Benefits When You Stop Washing Your Hair So Much

TIME! I save time getting ready now that I’ve stopped washing my hair so much. What girl doesn’t want to shave some time off her routine everyday?

MONEY! I’m using less shampoo so I’m having to stock up less. And a little of Virtue Refresh Dry Shampoo goes a long way, making it the longest lasting dry shampoo I’ve tried.

So, are you up for the challenge? With these simple tips and a great dry shampoo like Virtue Refresh, it’s completely possible to stop washing your hair so much and still look good. Follow me on Instagram and share your Virtue Refresh experience with me!
