8 Fun Things To Do With Your Dog This Summer

Dog Mom Stuff, Lifestyle / Friday, June 26th, 2020

Summer time is such a fun time to be a dog mom! Well, it’s always a fun time to be a dog mom, but summer just feels more special than other times throughout the year. There’s always something fun to do! Our girls live inside with us, so I always look for ways to get outdoors with them and spoil them even more. But, we live in a pretty hot climate and finding things to do with your dog can be a challenge sometimes. So, if you’re a fellow dog parent like me looking for creative ways to connect with your pooch, here are 8 fun things to do with your dog this summer!

Take a Road Trip

All we have to do is pretend like we are going somewhere and our girls go crazy. They LOVE going on a truck ride or golf cart ride with us. It doesn’t matter where we go as long as they are with us. And it doesn’t have to be a long road trip. Just jumping into the car to grab a takeout lunch or coffee counts. Read about our day trip to the Willow City Loop bluebonnets in this post!

Make Frozen Treats

Our dogs love ice cubes so we’ve been putting a big bowl of them on the patio during the summer. Lola will eat every single one before they even melt. You can also freeze a favorite chew toy in ice or make a healthy frozen snack. Check out these DIY frozen dog treat ideas and recipes.

Throw a Backyard Pool Party

It’s in Lola and Bella’s Labrador nature to be drawn to water. And during the summer, it helps to keep them cool. I’ve talked about this dog pool a few times and it continues to be one of the best purchases I’ve made for our girls. It sets up in minutes, fills fast, and you don’t have to worry about nails as it isn’t inflatable.

Eat at a Dog Friendly Restaurant Patio

I love living in such a dog friendly city. There are so many restaurant options that welcome your four-legged friends. If eating at a restaurant isn’t feasible for you right now, I recommend grabbing takeout and bringing your dog to a park or other open green space.

Pack a Picnic (don’t forget the dog food/treats)

Speaking of parks, a picnic is a really fun way to connect with your dog. Our girls love laying on a picnic blanket and again, just being with us. They usually think all of our food is for them, so I always bring a little kibble and some treats so they can feel like they’re just as much a part of the picnic as we are. You can even have a picnic in your own backyard, which I think is just as fun.

Include Your Dog in All Your Summer Celebrations

These days, we look for any reason to celebrate! Does your dog have a summer birthday? Throw them a party! (check out the birthday party we threw for Lola recently in this post!) Include them in your anniversary or graduation celebration. Or maybe it’s just a “thanks for letting me sleep in” kind of party. Seriously, any excuse to celebrate is a good excuse. I think our dogs know when something special is going on.

Take Early Morning or Evening Walks

One positive side effect of Paul working from home is our ability to take more morning walks with our girls. They know the instant I put on my running shoes that we are going for a walk. We have to just say “W” or spell out W-A-L-K. In the summer, it’s so much better for them in the morning or evening.

Visit a Dog Friendly Winery

We are fortunate to live close to some pretty amazing wineries, and several of them welcome your dogs, too. Just make sure to know before you go and bring some water for them. Both grapes and alcohol are poisonous to dogs. Keep that in mind if you’re planning on a photo op in the vines, too. One of my favorite dog friendly Texas wineries is William Chris Vineyards!
