How to Tie a Blanket Scarf and 5 Helpful Uses For It

DIY, Fashion / Tuesday, January 30th, 2018

I know that many of us are ready for spring but I’m still relishing in scarf season. When the temperatures drop I love wrapping up in a giant blanket scarf. There are tons of tutorials out there on how to tie a blanket scarf a multitude of ways, but the way I’m going to show you is probably the easiest. It’s my throw on and go staple this time of year and takes only seconds to style. In addition to showing you how I tie my own blanket scarf, I have 5 helpful uses for it that you might not think about. Uses that don’t always include actually wearing it and that can make a huge difference when traveling.

Let’s talk about the obvious use for your blanket scarf first – wearing it!

How to Tie A Blanket Scarf

This is so easy, I almost feel silly explaining it. But if you bought a blanket scarf for the first time and are now wondering how to fit all that fabric stylishly around your neck (and make it look effortless at the same time), here’s how I do it in 3 easy steps.

1 – Take your scarf and fold it into a triangle shape.

2 – Fold/roll the long folded edge down a couple of times. You don’t have to do this, but I do it so that it shortens it a bit. I don’t have the longest torso so this works for me.

3 – Turn the folded edge towards your neck and bring the ends around behind your head. Tie them once and bring the ends back to the front. Tuck them under the triangular shape of your scarf. Ta-da! You just styled your blanket scarf (and you look cute – give yourself a high five!).

In addition to wearing a blanket scarf around your neck, here are a few different ways that I’ve used mine.

5 Helpful Uses for a Blanket Scarf

1 – Use your blanket scarf as an actual blanket. After all, the word blanket is in the name! I’ve used mine on cold airplanes and trains, so I always remember to pack one when traveling.

2 – Impromptu picnic! Yes, this is another blanket-type use, but sometimes you need a place to sit for a little spontaneous nosh. We love to picnic when we’re in Europe. Many of the public parks encourage it so bring your blanket scarf and live like locals!

3 – Ball it up and use it as a pillow. Blanket scarves are large and have tons of soft and squishy fabric to spare. This makes long layovers a little more bearable.

4 – Wear it as a poncho or a wrap. Secure it with a belt or dress it up with a vintage brooch. Instant outfit update. And oh so warm!

5 – Wrap it around your waist as a skirt. Ok, stay with me on this one. I know it sounds a little weird, but there have been a few times where we’ve wanted to tour a European cathedral or basilica and you have to be respectfully covered up. With a blanket scarf I’m all set.

What are some of your favorite ways to wear a blanket scarf?
