Now that you’ve had your laughs, there are ways to pull off the denim-on-denim trend without reincarnating that infamous Justin and Britney coordinated look. You know the one.

Well fear not, blue jean babes. Thankfully, there are many ways to wear your favorite denim pieces in harmony. Jeans are the most universal of clothing pieces, and that includes pairing them with other denim items, if you know what you’re doing.

Mix washes

Whatever you do, don’t wear the same denim wash on top and bottom. Looking like some denim superhero is not what you want. This look is why it’s been dubbed the Texas Tuxedo. Unless you want to avoid social interaction with everyone around you, try to avoid this.

Go for color

White denim is always chic and looks great with a dark denim top. Black jeans or grey jeans (like my favorite pair) work well with a faded denim shirt or even chambray.

Just say no to denim accessories

This includes denim shoes, scarves, bags, and any other denim accessory. I’m pretty sure I remember some sort of denim necklace or earrings that one of my teachers wore in the 80’s. Let’s all pray to the fashion gods that that never comes back.

Don’t stress…distress

Rips and frays are your friend when it comes to wearing denim on denim. I paired my favorite distressed boyfriend jeans with a more tailored dark denim top and I love the contrast it created.

Make a statement

Avoid those denim accessories but don’t be afraid to add a fun statement piece like a sparkling necklace or a stiletto heel. My gold and blue hued necklace is not something I would wear everyday, but I love how it transforms the look into something just a bit more dressed up. I went with a nude heel to keep the focus on my outfit, but a great pair of Louboutins with that classic red sole would work, too. Just accentuate with a single color so that it doesn’t look too busy.
