One of the big questions I get often is, How do you balance blogging and working a full time a job? Well, I might not always have it together where that’s concerned but one thing that does help is having an organized bag of essentials that help me bounce from office to blog and back again.
When I was little I was never allowed inside my mom’s purse. That was a definite no man’s land for me (and now as an adult woman I completely understand why), but because of that I was always dying to know what’s inside. Even now I enjoy seeing what other ladies are carrying around. I mean, there might be something really helpful or interesting in there that I never even knew existed! That doesn’t mean I snoop in another lady’s purse, but I always love when other bloggers share what’s in their bag.
For any other women out there juggling multiple gigs, maybe what I’m carrying around will help you out.
What’s in My Bag: Office Edition
The Tote
First, let’s talk the bag itself. I need a sturdy tote that can hold a lot of stuff but also look professional and polished. My husband bought this buttery soft Prada tote for me when we were in Milan and I adore it, mostly because he gave it to me. But it’s a total workhorse, too. There is a large interior with side pocket for stowing my computer and large agenda, plus a pocket for my phone and a zip pocket for other small loose items. I use smaller cosmetic bags to keep other small items organized.
Laptop
I am so glad I switched to a Macbook a few years ago. I’ve always been an Apple girl, but I’d been forced to use PCs for work for way too long. I finally decided to invest in myself and purchase a computer that can double for work and blogging. I love the Macbook and take it everywhere.
Agenda and Small Notebook
Yes, I know it’s the 21st century but I still can’t tear myself away from a paper planner. I do utilize Outlook and iCal for keeping appointments, but I still like seeing my weeks and months outlined on the page. I am also a huge nerd when it comes to office supplies and I love using gel pens and other highlighters to feel organized. I also carry a small notebook to jot down ideas and other to-dos. I’m always thinking of new content ideas for the blog and I usually have to write down a number or other piece of info for work.
Wallet
I spend a lot of time in my car so coffee runs are just part of my day. Plus I never drive without my license (don’t worry, mom). I’ve had the same Michael Kors wallet for years and it’s held up really well.
Earbuds
I take a lot of calls through my car’s bluetooth but I’m frequently in a coffee shop where I need to hear someone a little better. I also like to listen to music while I work.
Hand Cream
Part of my job requires me to go in and out of doors all day. That’s a lot of germy door knobs! I wash my hands throughout the day and need to keep them moisturized if I don’t want them to look like a shriveled up piece of fruit. I love this eucalyptus hand cream because a little goes a long way and it smells amazing!
Breath Strips
Meeting clients and working photoshoots mean my breath shouldn’t offend. These breath strips save the day! Gum would be fine too but there’s not always a place to spit it out and you should never meet a client while smacking.
Water Bottle
Contrary to popular belief, I don’t just exist on coffee and wine alone. Staying hydrated is a big part of my day. I always keep this stainless steel insulated water bottle in my bag because it keeps my water cold without sweating all over my stuff.
Phone
Duh…but let’s talk chargers. I know a lot of people carry around a battery pack or “juice” pack to keep their phone charged. I used to be one of those people until I found this charging case for iPhone (thanks to my husband). Now I always have 100% power and never have to plug in during the day. It’s basically like having two cell phone batteries at all times. I love it and can’t recommend it enough! For all the blogging, posting, and picture taking I do, it’s been a life saver.
Excedrin Migraine
This is one of the less glamorous essentials in my bag but oh so necessary. I’ve suffered from headaches my entire life but the work day can really bring them out. Between sinus pressure and tension, I can be rendered incapacitated without my Excedrin. Never leave home without it!
Lipstick
I always apply a fresh coat of lipstick (sometimes lip gloss) before heading into a meeting. My favorite shades come from Estée Lauder’s Pure Color Envy line.
Lip Balm
On my drive home I usually slather on some lip balm. Talking all day can really crack your lips and right now I’m loving Cocovit.
Sunglasses
Not only are these one of my favorite accessories but they are absolutely necessary for my day job. I love these shades from Diff Eyewear because they donate a pair of eyeglasses for every pair purchased as part of their buy one, give one program. Win-win!
Tissues
Allergy season wreaks havoc on my sinuses. It’s never cool to be the sniffly person in the meeting. I’ve also offered one to a frustrated client or two, which can go a long way with your relationship.
And that’s it! That’s everything that I carry in my bag for the office. What are some of your must haves? Do you need as much as me? Haha…seriously, I’d love to know what I’m missing. I’m sure there’s more room in this tote!
