One question we frequently get when it comes to travel is, “How do you decide where to travel to next?” (i.e. how to avoid travel FOMO) This is usually followed up with:
Do you spin a globe and randomly land somewhere? — No, more on that below.
Do you ever go back to the same place more than once? — Yes! Read why I think that’s important here!
We’ve never been to Europe, so where should we start? — Anywhere! Just go! But I have lots of travel guides here!

It may seem like we throw a dart at a map (we are WAY too much of the planner type for that crazy talk). In reality, there’s a lot that goes into deciding where to travel to next. From the timing to events to cost, it can seem overwhelming and let’s face it, no one wants travel FOMO!
So, how to decide where to travel to next? Here are some factors that we take into consideration before booking our next “big” trip!
Timing
One of the biggest things to consider when deciding where to travel to next is timing. What time of year can you get away from work? What will the weather be like? We loved going to Chile in January because it was summer there. It was so nice exchanging the cold at home for warm sunny days with a pisco sour in hand.
We typically decide and book our next travel destination about 6 months prior to when we want to visit.
Cost
Budget definitely plays a role in deciding where to travel to next. We spend a few months keeping our eyes on flights to see if they go up or down. We booked a trip to London while waiting on a train in Italy because the cost of the flight had plummeted that day. It was one of those better grab this deal fast kind of moments. It was too good of a price to pass up and my husband booked the tickets on his iPhone. You can look for airline deals here and there, but we prefer to stick to one airline and build points. We’ve been able to book tickets with points alone, saving hundreds and sometimes thousands on flights.
Don’t forget about the cost of living in the country you’re considering. Norway, for example, is the most expensive place we’ve visited so far. Two coffees and two croissants was about $20-25. Either prepare and budget or choose a different location that fits your everyday spending habits.
Events
If large crowds and lots of tourists bother you, then you may need to consider avoiding events like Oktoberfest or Coachella. Do some research on what may be happening in your potential destination during the time of year you’d like to visit. But sometimes events can dictate where you want to travel to next. We have enjoyed Germany and Switzerland in late November because of the prevalence of Christmas markets.
Get Inspired from TV & Books
If you still can’t decide where to travel to next, consider the idea that “life imitates art.”
Ever read Under the Tuscan Sun? If that doesn’t make you want to move to Italy, then you’re probably a robot. It’s just so dreamy, inspiring, romantic, adventuresome, and actually makes you want to undertake renovating a dilapidated villa (bank account and lack of construction knowledge be damned, I can totally do this!).
We actually fell in love with the idea of traveling to Greece from watching Below Deck Med. Even “garbage” reality TV is so much better when filmed in an exotic location. All those boats and blue and white had us considering Greece for the first time. So we booked it!

How to Avoid Travel FOMO
At the end of the day, it’s about going somewhere and experiencing something that inspires, educates, entertains, and connects you with the world around you. Once you’ve made your decision, own it! Just decide on your next travel destination and stick with it. There can always be another trip down the road.

A little about this outfit… This is the softest midi dress under $30 that is so packable! I think it’s a great option for a travel outfit, casual date, or thrown on over a swimsuit. It fits true to size and doesn’t hug in any weird places, if you know what I mean! 😉
