Tips For Layering Necklaces

Fashion / Thursday, March 25th, 2021

I love layering my necklaces these days. I have a ton of them and it’s really difficult to pick a favorite, so pairing them together makes me love them even more. If you were like me and seeing all these gorgeous necklace layering trends on social media made you very much overthink how to create the look for yourself, welcome to this post! I definitely thought too hard about how to create the “perfect” look, but it’s really all about what makes you happy. There is no right or wrong way, so just have some fun with it. That being said, here are a few little tips I’ve picked up for layering necklaces the easy way.

Minimum of 2 Pieces (duh…)

Kinda hard to layer with only one necklace, so this is a no-brainer. I like the simplicity of just two pieces but why not go for three? Or more? Personally, I find too much is too much unless the chains and adornments are on the delicate side. Then I say keep on going and layer more.

Mix Metals

A lot of what I wear is sterling silver. If I have gold tones in my jewelry it’s usually real gold mixed with platinum in my finer pieces and bronze in my more affordable ones. This layered necklace look features the Saguaro Cactus with Bird Pendant on the Oval Twist Changeable Charm Necklace, both from James Avery. I layered it with my Desert Rose Charm on a Bar Link Chain, both also from James Avery. The two pendants go well together, creating somewhat of a theme, for a bit of a western-inspired look.

Combine Different Chain Lengths & Thicknesses

The James Avery website provides a very helpful image when it comes to selecting your chain length, and many of their chains come in as many as 12 different lengths. I refer back to their chart all the time when layering necklaces. (Special thanks to James Avery for sponsoring this post, btw) Thickness of the chain can also be important, especially if you’re trying to avoid entanglement. Using different chain thicknesses not only looks good but helps to keep them from tangling together.

Layer Different Charm/Pendant Sizes

I like to layer my necklaces with the smallest pendant at the top and the largest pendant at the bottom. That way the look isn’t too top heavy. Although I do remember wearing chokers with large size pendants back in the 90’s. Hoping that trend doesn’t resurface with the rest of 90’s fashion. Eek…

Don’t Overthink It

Like I mentioned in the beginning of this post, just have fun with it. There aren’t any “rules” for layering necklaces. Just create a look that makes you happy. I hope these tips were helpful!
