The Trench Coat: A Timeless French Girl Style Staple

Fashion, France, Travel / Thursday, October 27th, 2022

Having spent my fair share of time in Paris, I’ve seen a lot of the “french girl style” so many of us like to emulate. It’s that effortlessly chic way of dressing that never goes out of style. Whether it’s a plain white tee, straight-leg jeans, and ballet flats or a pair of chic sneakers with a midi skirt, I think French girls just know what they’re doing in the wardrobe department (and the life department, for that matter – a bottle of rosé on the Seine, anyone?). On our most recent trip to Paris I saw one item in particular everywhere we went. It is truly a timeless French girl style staple – the trench coat.

I was so happy to have packed my trench coat on this trip to Paris. Not only was it an absolute necessity given the rainy weather we had, it meant that when the rest of my outfit was less than chic, my trench coat made me feel like I had just a little bit of that French girl style going for me. It was just the right amount of warmth, too.

I think Lola needs a trench coat, don’t you?

Thankful this trench coat has a hood!

A trench coat is certainly an investment piece. The style itself is more than a hundred years old, emerging during the First World War, so you can feel confident this item will be part of your wardrobe for quite some time. The history of this garment is actually quite fascinating. I loved this article from Smithsonian Magazine (it’s worth a good read). The trench coat is a statement piece with utilitarian functionality that originated out of a need to improve a soldier’s combat dress. It’s had many good, bad, and ugly iterations. But as far as I’m concerned, ever since Humphrey Bogart bid adieu to Ingrid Bergan on the tarmac at the end of Casablanca, I’ve always thought a trench coat was rather, well…at the expense of sounding a bit old school – dashing!

On our last day, the weather gods smiled down on Paris and I took advantage of it. I swapped my sneakers and sweatshirts for a pair of black leather booties and a sleek black turtleneck. A good pair of denim and my newest Polène bag completed my French girl style. The trench coat was the icing on the pâtisserie cake!
