A Day Trip to Montenegro

Montenegro, Travel / Wednesday, October 2nd, 2019

In addition to our day trip from Dubrovnik to Mostar, we also made a day to travel to Montenegro. Both are easy day trips from Dubrovnik by car, and since we were so close and curiosity got the best of us, we wanted to see Montenegro for ourselves.

We hired a private car from Octopus Transfers again to take us across the border from Croatia. As I mentioned in previous posts, this is really the most advantageous way to go. An English-speaking driver who can also assist with passport handling at the border crossings is a blessing.

Once across the border we stopped at a restaurant for a quick coffee and restroom break. Our driver knew the best place for this, as it was right on the water with a gorgeous view of the Bay of Kotor.

Our first official stop was in Perast. It has a quiet rustic charm to it and it was nice not having so many tourists crowding the boardwalk. I would definitely consider staying here.

We decided to stop at a waterfront hotel cafe for a little rose, and since we were feeling a little snacky we paired it with French fries. Have you ever just sipped rose, snacked on fries, and watched the boats go by? It’s kind of like a little piece of heaven. It was nice having not much of an agenda with the ability to just soak it all in. There are several restaurants and hotel cafes along the water, and I don’t believe you could go wrong with any of them.

The Bay of Kotor is beautiful, the mountains are stunning, and the people are friendly. Montenegro means “black mountain,” a fitting description for the dark mountains that seem to rise up from the coastline. I had zero expectations of Montenegro but had always heard it was a bit of an exotic place. I was happy to discover that it was a nice mix of exotic and rustic, and it definitely feels untapped touristically speaking.

Our next stop was Kotor, a walled medieval city that has a nice old town to explore. You can plan to spend about an hour and a half for lunch and strolling around. The city is very well preserved and clean. You enter through the main gate, which dates from 1555! Once inside, you can easily explore the shops and sights on foot. Take a break at one of the many street-lined cafes. We enjoyed a long lunch under umbrellas with a fan and misting system – it’s hot in Montenegro in the summer!

I was particularly interested in seeing the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, the symbol Kotor. Here in central Texas you can visit Saint Tryphon Farm & Vineyards for some pretty great wines, so I was excited to see the place that inspired it. Saint Tryphon is the patron saint of gardeners and wine growers.

We ended the day having an ice cold Coke with our driver at a newer and more high end real estate development outside of the old town, taking in views of mega yachts docked in the bay.
