It’s good to finally be back! After traveling for the better part of a month, it feels good to be home and back to a routine. Sorry to leave you guys hanging for so long, but hopefully you followed along on my Instagram! I have so much to share from our trip to the Balkans, from Eat+Stay+Play guides to every city, a recap of our sailing adventure, how to capture that Adriatic style, and of course, all about the wine. Before we get into any of that, let’s start with our Balkans travel itinerary.
Of all the Balkan countries, we traveled to Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia, and Montenegro. Most of our friends weren’t surprised with our choice of Croatia, with its current popularity (hey, Game of Thrones fans), but many were intrigued by the others and how exactly we got from place to place. This will give you an idea of how to plan your travel. I’ll go into much more detail in future guides.
You’ll note the prevalence of private transportation on this trip. While we usually prefer the ease and convenience of Europe’s train system, the countries we visited this time do not have rail transportation. Driving is pretty much your only option, and due to the number of border crossings, we felt most comfortable with reliable and highly rated transfer companies like Airtrail Slovenia and Octopus Transfers.
Here is our 19-day Balkans travel itinerary, including all day trips and transfers:
Day 1 – Fly overnight from U.S. to Ljubljana, Slovenia. Transportation from airport to Airbnb by Airtrail Slovenia (highly recommend).
Day 2 – Arrive in Old Town Ljubljana and check into Airbnb. Spend the remainder of the afternoon exploring the city.
Day 3 – Full day in Ljubljana.
Day 4 – Day trip to Lake Bled, Slovenia via Airtrail Slovenia. Pick your best weather day to visit Bled because it’s stunningly beautiful.
Day 5 – Travel day to Rovinj, Croatia via Octopus Transfers (highly recommend). Check into Airbnb and spend remainder of day in Rovinj.
Day 6 – Day trip to Pula, Croatia via public bus
Day 7 – Full day in Rovinj
Day 8 – Travel day to Split, Croatia via Octopus Transfers. Check into Airbnb and spend the remainder of the day in Split.
Day 9 – Full day in Split
Day 10 – Beach day in Split
Day 11 – Travel day to Croatian Islands with Adris Nautic (@croatia_sailing_adventure on Instagram). First stop, Hvar.
Day 12-15 – Sailing days. Total of 5 days and 4 nights. Each night arriving in a different Croatian island. After Hvar, travel to Korčula, Pelješac peninsula (wine tour here), Mljet, Šipan, and finally ending in Dubrovnik. Check into Airbnb and spend the afternoon and evening exploring old town.
Day 16 – Day trip to Mostar, Bosnia via Octopus Transfers. Spend the evening in Dubrovnik.
Day 17 – Day trip to Montenegro via Octopus Transfers. Spend the evening in Dubrovnik.
Day 18 – Full day in Dubrovnik. One afternoon, two evenings, and a full day are more than enough time to see everything.
Day 19 – Fly back to U.S. from Dubrovnik
I hope this helps you plan your Balkans adventure. If you have questions, please let me know in the comments. I also documented each day in detail in my Instagram highlights. As I mentioned, I’ll have more in-depth posts coming soon!
