Dog Mom Update: Bella’s 13th Birthday

Dog Mom Stuff, Lifestyle / Tuesday, March 16th, 2021

Well, we have a teenager. Bella turned 13 last week and her birthday was anything but boring. I knew when I was planning her 13th birthday that I wanted it to be really special. She’s the best girl we could ask for and she deserves to be celebrated, whether she really knows it’s her birthday or not. But honestly I think she knew. A dog mom always knows.

Each year for Bella’s birthday we’ve had a different theme – ladybugs, unicorns, turtles, and even SpongeBob at one point. And each year as I’m getting her pupcake ready or setting out themed paper plates and napkins, she follows closely behind me and inspects what I’m doing with even more interest than usual. I’m convinced her vocabulary has evolved to understanding full sentences because when I say, “We’re getting ready for your birthday party,” she gives me a knowing look like she can’t wait to be the center of our attention.

This year I knew I wanted the focus to be that Bella is now a teenager, and consequently began searching for the cutest decorations I could find. Amazon to the rescue, of course! I found the perfect 13th birthday party kit and it had everything I wanted and more (for the low price of around $20). I only ended up using a few items and saving the rest for another party. Lola’s birthday will be here in just a couple months.

Instead of a store-bought cake, this year I decided to make my own. The cake is really for the humans, but Bella did get to lick a plate or two. I found adorable llama and cactus decorations at my local HEB and used white and pink icing to match. The 13 cake topper came in the party kit. These gold and white polkadot paper plates were perfect for serving.

Since it was Sunday and we typically do Italian on Sundays, Paul made Pappardelle with olive oil, chicken, and artichokes. It was perfect!

At the end of the day, all the balloons, cake, and streamers are not even a fraction of the appreciation I can show for this incredible being. Bella is truly an exceptional dog. She has been with us through so much and continues to show her loyalty like no other. She lets me warm my toes under her when I sleep at night. She lets me cry into her thick fur if I’m having a bad day. She gives me a happy tail wag when I just look at her and smile. She patiently does whatever I ask of her and she never asks for anything in return. I love her so much that sometimes it physically pains me. I am so thankful that we have had these last 13 years together, and I look forward to more adventures to come!
