Dog Sledding in Colorado

Travel / Thursday, February 27th, 2020

Hello and happy Thursday, everyone! I didn’t mean to leave you hanging for so many days, but we just returned from a little jaunt to Vail, Colorado. I really wanted to unplug and just enjoy myself. I needed some mountains, a little snow, and of course some après ski. Paul was working while we were there but we did manage to do something we’ve always wanted to do – dog sledding!

Instead of skiing this year, we decided to do more of an excursion. Dog sledding has been on my bucket list for a while. I researched all the available options around the Vail area and found Good Times Adventures outside of Breckenridge, an easy drive from Vail. Their approach to dog sledding along with all the incredible reviews I read, made them an easy choice.

This was honestly one of the best days ever! I mostly loved getting to spend time with the dogs, but the sledding itself was a pretty exhilarating experience. Read on to see why I recommend dog sledding in Colorado with Good Times Adventures.

About Dog Sledding With Good Times Adventures

Good Times Adventures is a short drive outside of Breckenridge yet feels a world away. It’s tucked in among a forest of trees and the drive can feel a bit remote, but as they say, just follow the directions on the website and keep going. You won’t have any cell service out there, but that’s a good thing. You’ll want to spend as much time as possible just experiencing everything around you.

Good Times Adventures is close to the White River National Forest, and the surrounding topography is stunning. Bring something to snap photos!

The dog sledding tour takes you 6 miles along the Swan River Valley. You’ll wind your way through a forest of snow covered trees that break every so often to give you a breathtaking view of the mountains around you. It’s so quiet and serene out there. I felt like I was either inside the most interesting snow globe or on the cover of the most beautiful Christmas card. The photos just don’t do it justice.

We lucked out with a gorgeous blue sky day, but regardless of weather, you should dress in ski appropriate clothing. The dogs are pretty fast and it can be a little cold on your face and fingers.

Why Dog Sledding?

If you are even remotely a “dog person,” then dog sledding is for you. Good Times Adventures allowed us a lot of time spent with the dogs on our team. We got to pet them and praise them to our hearts’ content. The dogs were incredibly friendly and outgoing, and they loved getting lots of attention.

Dog sledding with Good Times Adventures is really educational. You’ll be introduced to your dog sled team by an experienced guide, and informed on the history of dog sledding and how the dogs are uniquely built for this kind of work. They love to run. Even as we stopped for breaks to let them rest, the dogs continue to pull at the reins wanting to keep going. They also roll and dive into the snow to cool off. It was pretty adorable.

Good Times Adventures runs a Siberian Husky breeding and adoption program. It is evident that the dogs are well cared for, healthy, and happy. It feels good to support an organization that is maintaining the integrity of such a hard-working breed and knowing that the dogs end up in loving homes.

One of the biggest reasons to go dog sledding with Good Times Adventures is that you get to participate in all parts of the sledding activity. You have the opportunity to ride in the sled (which is a great way to get some fun video), as well as drive the sled. After some simple instructions from the guide, you might be a little nervous. But there’s nothing to worry about. The dogs do almost all of the work. When you’re not riding or driving the sled, you ride in a sleigh pulled by your guide on a snowmobile. The dog sled team runs several yards behind the snowmobile, so you don’t feel like you’re just in a caravan. The guide uses hand signals to let you know when to start, slow down, or stop.
