When you live in Texas, you’re not always blessed with appropriately cold weather this time of year. I’ve spent a decent number of Christmas mornings in shorts and sandals. But lately, I’ve been loving these cold fronts we keep getting and over the weekend I treated myself to my first ever hot toddy! I know, I know…where have I been? It was so good that I wanted to share what I used and how I made a holiday hot toddy with Garrison Brothers Bourbon Whiskey!
A very special thank you to Garrison Brothers for sponsoring this post! As always, all opinions expressed are honest and my own.
What is a Hot Toddy?
While I have jokingly referred to a hot toddy as simply a nightcap of sorts, it’s more than that. Traditionally it’s made with hot water, liquor, honey, and some herbs, spices, and citrus – think lemon, cinnamon, and clove. It’s meant to enjoy in cold (possibly also wet) weather, or to soothe symptoms of a cold or the flu. But it doesn’t have to. A hot toddy can also just be a warm drink to enjoy before retiring for the night. I guess I was onto something with my nightcap comment!
About Garrison Brothers Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey
As I mentioned, I used Garrison Brothers Bourbon Whiskey. Their lovely team sent over a bottle of their Small Batch Bourbon Whiskey and by itself it’s pretty darn smooth. As a Texas whiskey, it definitely holds its own to its Kentucky brethren. It’s made in Hye, Texas one barrel at a time, and the quality shows. You should know that the bourbon drinker in our family is not usually me. Paul loves it, but I have a hard time. I can honestly say that is not the case with Garrison Brothers. The Small Batch is smooth and refined with a buttery vanilla aroma and just a slight smoke on the tongue. It’s really just lovely and the perfect end to a cold night.

Since this was my first time making a hot toddy, I had a little help from Oliver Pluff & Co.’s Hot Toddy Recipe Kit. I used the Orange Clove mix and it couldn’t have been easier. The kit provides all the spices and muslin bags for steeping. If you’ve never made a hot toddy before, you NEED this kit! It comes in a beautiful little presentation, too, so it would make a great gift!
Add bag of spices to hot water and steep 5 min. Remove bag.
Add tablespoon of honey and 2 ounces of Garrison Brothers Bourbon Whiskey.
Top with hot water and add a cinnamon stick.
What makes it a holiday hot toddy? The cinnamon stick makes it feel special to me and reminds me of wassail. The addition of the bourbon and the warmth of the drink make me feel like I’m in a European Christmas market holding a cup of vin chaud or gluhwein. A hot toddy is just such a cozy drink – perfect for the coziest time of year! I think I’ll call mine, the “Smooth and Soothe.”
Have you ever made a hot toddy?
