I love it when I get a slight whiff of my perfume throughout the day. It’s even better when someone compliments your fragrance – what perfume are you wearing? It smells great! But neither of these scenarios can happen without knowing how to properly apply fragrance in the first place. Today I’m sharing a few little tips I learned from my own research plus my current favorite scents.
I think everyone likes to smell good. Scents can even have an effect on our mood or remind us of a pleasant memory. I have several fragrances I alternate between. Some of them were gifts and others I picked up on my own. Some are expensive or exotic while others are simple and just make me happy. Some of them are souvenirs from countries I’ve been to. No matter the price point or type of fragrance you enjoy, when you find a scent you love you want it to last.
Tips For How To Properly Apply Fragrance
Spritz But Don’t Rub
Friction creates heat on the skin’s surface, altering the fragrance notes. For the purest application of your fragrance, resist rubbing. Just spritz and do nothing at all.
Moisturize First
Perfume lasts longer on moisturized skin, so apply an unscented moisturizer prior to spritzing. You could apply a complimentary or identically scented body lotion, but I am always really careful about layering these things. I think a little goes a long way.
Apply to Skin, Not Clothes
Spritz areas of your skin that are exposed to the air, not hidden under fabric. I personally don’t find perfumes to be very gentle on certain fabrics, so I always spritz my body and give it time to dry before getting dressed.
Where On Skin To Apply
Pulse points like the insides of the wrists and neck are still a good practice. But try the back of the neck which allows the fragrance to scent your hair. Do not, however, spray it directly into your hair, as the alcohol has a drying effect. This works best with hair that is at least shoulder length.
More Concentrated Means Longer Lasting
Ever wondered what the difference is between perfume and eau de parfum? It’s all about concentration. Fragrances marked as “perfumes” have the highest concentration of scent, followed by eau de parfum then eau de toilette. You’ll only need a couple of spritzes of perfume whereas an eau de toilette works more like a body spray.
My Current Favorite Scents
A long-time favorite scent of mine is Lovely Day by Ramon Monegal. I first discovered it years ago at Neiman Marcus and was stunned by how incredible the scent is. Combining both clean and floral fragrance, Lovely Day is an intensely scented perfume yet not overpowering. To me it’s like smelling a freshly cut bouquet of flowers. It is truly a work of art, from the scent of the fragrance to the bottle designed after a vintage inkwell. To this day, it remains the ultimate in luxurious fragrance to me and that’s why I’ve chosen to really feature it in this post. This year, Paul surprised me with a new bottle for Valentine’s Day! If you’re unsure of the best Ramon Monegal perfume for you, I’d recommend the 7-piece discovery set! Lovely Day must be ordered directly from Spain, but Saks Fifth Avenue has a nice selection of Ramon Monegal perfumes.
Another more recent favorite of mine is Idôle Eau de Parfum by Lancôme. I’ve spoken about it before both here and on Instagram, and it’s become a regular in my rotation. I love the light floral scent and gorgeous bottle. Lancôme has just released a new version of this one called Idôle L’Intense that I can’t wait to try. Idôle is a great year-round fragrance.
For a more wintery scent, I love wearing My Burberry Black. I first bought a bottle of this perfume at Harrod’s in London. It was the perfect souvenir and I still love it today. Because it’s a warm scent with a little patchouli, I feel best wearing it in the fall and winter months.
Also in the perfume-as-souvenir category is Comme une Evidence Eau de Parfum by Yves Rocher. This one has a bit of nostalgia for me as I can remember my mother loving Yves Rocher products back in the early 90s. For a French brand this fragrance is quite affordable and perfect for everyday. I purchased a bottle from a Yves Rocher shop at La Défense in Paris and every time I wear it I think of the City of Lights.
