Last weekend our little baby Lola turned a year old, and I can’t believe it! Where does the time go? Since you only turn one once, I wanted Lola’s first birthday to be nothing short of beautiful and sweet just like she is. I did my best to make the celebration as festive as possible, and I wasn’t going to let quarantine get in the way. Throwing a dog birthday party is just the norm around here, regardless.
Rewind to a few months ago when I started planning Lola’s birthday. Since her name is Lola, we always find ourselves singing Copacabana (At The Copa) by Barry Manilow. You know the one…Her name was Lola, she was a showgirl. With yellow feathers in her hair… And now that song is stuck in your head. Sorry! But we have been singing this song to her since we brought her home and one day my mom says, why don’t you have a Copacabana party for her birthday? I said, done!
When it comes to celebrating our girls, I almost always incorporate pink into the decor. I have a lot of pink things that are easy to reuse every year and I add in some new things for whatever theme I’m going for. I wanted Lola’s Copacabana party to be reminiscent of the Copa of the 1940’s when Carmen Miranda and Groucho Marx filmed the musical there. So palm leaves and pineapples were what I knew I needed.
I wasn’t able to shop like I usually do, but I managed to find some cute things that would arrive on time from Oriental Trading. When I found these pineapple plates, I built the rest of the decor around them. Pink pineapple cocktail napkins, pink cutlery, green palm leaves, and a little black and white accents rounded it all out. Lola even wore her pink tutu from Halloween. I added the blush and rose gold garland just because I thought it was cute.
Paul made a great dinner like he always does and I baked a cake. I tried a new-to-me kitchen hack and it was the best cake I’ve ever made – it was so good! Read my post on how to turn a boxed cake into a bakery cake! Then we FaceTimed with our parents so they could join the party, too. It was so fun having everyone together, even though it was virtual. We all had wine or a cocktail and my mom even decorated her own house! We lit the candle, made a collective wish, and sang to our sweet Lola. I couldn’t have been happier at that moment.
Lola’s first year has been so wonderful. She really is such a good dog. Even as a young puppy she was incredibly chill, and she’s never torn up anything. She just loves her toys. By far she is the sweetest and most physically affectionate dog I’ve ever had. We love her so much and wanted to give her the best birthday ever! A dog birthday party is just good for the soul.
One more thing…we purchased a swimming pool recently for our girls and they LOVE it! I highly recommend this dog pool as it’s durable and easy to set up and take down. Plus it’s huge and a great price!
Have you ever thrown a birthday party for your pup?
