If you’ve been following our travels for some time then you know how much we love a day trip. Today we ventured beyond the villages of Luberon and drove to Les Baux-de-Provence. As we left Bonnieux the terrain went from sloping green hills to dramatic rock plateaus soaring into the sky. At the top of one of these rocky giants is the village of Les Baux-de-Provence, one of southern France’s most beautiful towns with traces of inhabitants dating from 6,000 BC.
Today Les Baux-de-Provence is a well-preserved medieval village with numerous shops and the ruins of a castle. Les Baux can only be visited on foot, so we parked the car at the bottom of the village and traversed a long stone stairway to reach the top. We enjoyed a strong espresso on a shaded cafe terrace before exploring. There is a really nice shop for olive oil soaps and I grabbed a few bars plus a decorative soap dish for the new house. By the end of this trip I’ll have enough olive oil soap to open my own shop. We also found a specialty food shop where we tasted tapenades (and bought some, of course). Their sister shop across the street had a variety of delicious sweets, including some caramel chocolate covered almonds that we also had to bring home.
We stopped into a linen shop and I bought a long linen dress that I’ll wear to our dinner Monday evening. Linen is the most comfortable fabric to wear here in the summer. I’m bringing home two gorgeous linen dresses from this trip – count me as one of the converted! Hopefully the remainder of August in Amsterdam will feel a bit summery so I can continue to wear them for a while. I also spotted more crochet bags, this time in the form of granny square totes. I can’t wait to try and recreate these myself!
After our visit to Les Baux-de-Provence we enjoyed a long and amazing lunch at Château d’Estoublon. More on that in another post!
Bonsoir et à demain!
