Happy Friday, friends! I hope this week was good to you. Today I’m switching gears a bit and talking about something that I’ve been doing that’s more on the artistic side. During the lockdown period of 2020, I started a new hobby that I’ve been wanting to try forever – watercolor art. I wasn’t sure if I would be any good, but it really wasn’t about that. It was about finding something that was fun, inspirational, and maybe a little cathartic.
Those who really know me, know that I need to create to be happy. I need to try new things and find ways to express myself. I just don’t feel fulfilled, and frankly can start to get really restless, when I’m not involved in some kind of creative endeavor. Watercolor painting has been exactly what I needed.
I started by ordering a simple watercolor paint set, some brushes, and some paper from Amazon. I didn’t know what I was doing so I didn’t want to invest a lot of money right away. I read a few blogs by real artists for some guidance on the best kinds of supplies to get started, and what not to waste your money on.
My first attempt was painting a small cactus. We traveled to West Texas back in November (read my travel guide here) and I brought my newly acquired paint set, knowing I would be surrounded by inspiration. Each day I found time to sit on the patio of our Airbnb and paint the things around me. After the cactus I tried birds, mountains, landscapes…really just anything to try and get the hang of it. I was immediately hooked.
Fast forward to today and the kinds of things I’m painting have shifted a bit. Right now I’m focused on things that are inspired by our travels to Europe. Many of the accomplished artists I started following said to simply paint the things you love. Well, I love travel and all the visual joys it brings, whether in the form of a pink vespa with a flower basket or a pretty bottle of champagne.
I love to use a variety of colors and as you can tell, my watercolor pieces lean towards impressionistic whimsy. If I wanted my art to look exactly like the picture then I would just frame a photograph. I like that what I’m painting has more of a brushstroke feel.
And here’s the cool part…
My watercolor art is now available for sale! My favorite European antiques shop in San Antonio, Domestic Provisions, reached out and wanted to feature some of my paintings! If you’re local, please stop by and see their beautiful store and check out my work! You can also send them a DM on Instagram and they’ll be happy to assist you.
Each painting is done on 8×8 watercolor paper and comes in a protective sleeve with hard backing. They work well when matted into a 12×12 frame and are perfect for bar carts, dressing rooms, powder rooms, or any room in your home that you want to add a bit of color and fun.
I really hope you love my watercolor art as much as I enjoy painting them. Have you picked up any new hobbies?
