Over the last year plus, like many of us, I’ve been trying some new things. Ever since the pandemic began, I sort of re-evaluated the things I enjoy doing and also realized just how precious time itself is. I want to spend it with the people I care most about and when I’m not doing that, I want to spend it doing things I truly enjoy. Things that make me a better, smarter, more interesting and generally more fun person to be around. Ha ha… I just don’t like to stagnate.
You may recall a post I did a while back about exploring the art of watercolor painting. I’m still doing that and really enjoy the equal parts relaxation and challenge it brings me. You can read my post and see some of my art here!
Something else I’ve enjoyed doing is brushing up on my foreign language skills, particularly my French! This was spurned by our summer trip to Paris but I’ve kept it up and have really tried to use more French in my everyday life. Even repeating just a word or two daily makes a huge difference in my comprehension. And learning another language opens up so many new connections to the world around me. That seems so “high brow,” I know, but it’s the truth.

My latest new thing is learning to crochet. Sounds a bit grandmotherly but to be honest, I’m ADDICTED! It’s one of the most relaxing things I’ve ever done and I love it as much as I love reading – which says A LOT! I just had this need to create something and learning to crochet has allowed me to make some pretty fun as well as functional things. How did I learn? YouTube, of course! The modern school of choice for anyone facing a how-to dilemma. What did we ever do without the Internet?
Anyway, I wanted to share some of the things I’ve made and encourage you to get making something!
One of the first crochet projects I tackled was this French market tote bag! I love my Longchamp Filet Market tote so much that I decided I could probably make one. And I did! I MADE THIS! How cool is that?!
I’m ready for all the Fall farmer’s markets now. This bag is large enough to fill with lots of things. It’s sturdy enough for a bottle (or two) of wine, some snacks, and even a baguette if you’re feeling exceptionally fabulous and French. 😉
If you want to make this yourself, you can get the free pattern from Two of Wands. It’s very easy and the perfect project for a beginner. And when you’re done you can show off your handiwork!
I decided that I would also need a matching small pouch to keep things like keys and my ID in. So I made this pom pom change purse (also a free pattern). I LOVE this little guy. The pom pom is in a contrasting color yarn and I made it BIG on purpose (it’s the blue one in the photo below). For really easy and fun pom pom tips, watch this YouTube video from Sheep & Stitch.
Here are a few other little projects I’ve made (all patterns available for free):
Amigurumi Puppy (I couldn’t resist and had to make this adorable little dog) from Love Crafts
Ruffle Scrunchie from Love Crafts
Bookmarks from Love Crafts
More Pom Pom Pouches from Yarnspirations
Coffee Cup Cozy from One Dog Woof
This is just a sampling of what I’ve been making. I told you I was addicted! I have some more projects I’ll be sharing!
So, what do YOU feel like making today?

I was about your age when I learn to crochet from a friend of mine. Probably take it up again one of these days like I do my sewing.
Thank you Dotty! You’ll have to share with me what you make when you start crocheting again! 🙂
