Our Amsterdam Apartment

Amsterdam, Expat Life / Wednesday, February 16th, 2022

We arrived just two days ago with 10 (yes just 10, LOL) suitcases of our belongings. After working some kinks out, I think this place is starting to feel like home. I’ve lived in many apartments, but it’s been a few years since we’ve rented a place. And renting in a foreign country has just about the steepest learning curve you can imagine. I thought I’d share how we’re settling in plus a few photos of our Amsterdam apartment!

There were a few minor issues at first…

The apartment had been vacant for a few months so several things were turned off and unplugged. We had to turn on the hot water heater and the boiler. Boiler? What’s that? We don’t have those where we come from. Once we got those two things going the radiators (something else we are still learning to use) put out a nice warmth and we could take hot showers. If you’ve been to The Netherlands in February then you know that a cold shower is not even something I would wish on my worst enemy. Then Paul worked on getting the WiFi and cable TV set up. He was so happy to have a soccer game on after dinner. Once that was done we made a small list of things to discuss with our landlord. He came by the very next day and is going to fix a couple of small issues. Yay!

I got to work unpacking a small village worth of bags. We will be making a couple more trips over until we live here permanently so we are bringing as much of our closet as we can. The rest will come in a container with our furniture and remainder of our household. All the furniture we currently have is rented.

Things I love about our Amsterdam apartment…

I love the garden space! I can’t wait for our girls to see it, too. It’s going to be so nice to be out there when the weather warms up a bit. But even in the cold it’s lovely.

I love that I have my own bathroom. Paul is using our en suite and I’m taking the one with the big soaking tub, of course. It’s just outside our room and is bigger so I don’t mind.

We have a laundry room! An entire room dedicated to washing clothes is a luxury. We even have an extra fridge and freezer in there plus double sinks. Laundry is one of the challenges here (it can take 2-3 hours just to dry one load of clothes), so I’m excited to have a decent space to do it in.

The storage space! There is actually a good amount of storage space in this apartment, including some beautifully designed and efficient wardrobes in the bedrooms.

We have two balconies! We have a small balcony just off our bedroom that has beautiful iron railings. It feels a little French and I love that. The other bedroom looks over the garden space in the back and has a big balcony. I can’t wait for our outdoor furniture to arrive now.

The neighborhood! I love our quiet tree-lined street and the little shops and restaurants that are just a short walk away. Once I get my bike, I’ll be able to zoom around much faster.
