I love a long weekend. I love having loose plans, being spontaneous, hanging in, sleeping in, and pretty much doing whatever you feel like for a solid three days (three and a half if you count Friday evening, which I always do). Paul’s birthday was this past weekend and we spent it here in Amsterdam doing some of the things we’ve always done for his birthday while injecting a little Amsterdam life into the mix. I’m sharing some great food recommendations in today’s post of scenes from a weekend in Amsterdam!

Friday
This is our favorite night of the week by far. We chose to spend it hanging out at home in the garden with Lola. The weather has just been amazing and we wanted to take advantage of it. Paul bought a new grill and we found a butcher that I think is going to be “our” butcher. If you live in Amsterdam, you must visit Kema Vlees. It’s a carnivore’s heaven. Paul wanted to do a big butcher block of grilled meats to christen the grill, so we ended up with lamb chops, chorizo sausage, ribeye steak, and bone marrow. Everything was so good but I am dying for Paul to do bone marrow again. It was heavenly!
Saturday
Another thing we love is a long lunch. I mean 2-3+ hours of slow eating and drinking. Throw in a terrace when the weather is good and I start to feel like we are starring in our own rom-com. It’s really the perfect afternoon. We enjoyed a long lunch at Maris Piper Brasserie in De Pijp. Not only does this place check every single box in the perfect aesthetic department, it has great food. The roasted chicken is particularly worth noting (sorry no pic – it was devoured quickly). The roasted artichoke was also really good.

Sunday
Sunday is all about relaxing and piddling around the house. I’m usually doing some sort of laundry and we plan the rest of the week’s meals. Something else we love about Sunday is our weekly Italian dinner. We started this tradition during Covid and we continue to do it with gusto. It was another great weather night so we took dinner to the garden. Paul grilled some incredible tomahawk pork chops (thanks, Kema Vlees!) in a Tuscan style that is lick-the-glaze-off-your-plate good. Subscribe to America’s Test Kitchen for the recipe here. We had a visit from the neighbor’s cat that lasted about 5 minutes until Lola saw her. I’m working on that unlikely friendship, but the jury is still out.
Monday
Paul took the day off and we started with brunch at Staring at Jacob. It’s been on our list of Amsterdam “must do’s” for a while. We took a risk without a reservation and got there early. We were rewarded for our early bird efforts with the perfect corner table on the sidewalk (but on a weekend, I’d recommend having a reservation for sure). They have a nice little quiet corner in the shade with a view of the canal – so perfectly Amsterdam. It’s also a nice brunch spot if you’re craving more of an American style brunch experience – think chicken and waffles, avocado toast, mimosas, etc. I had the poached eggs and smoked salmon on a thick toastie and Paul went with the Nashville hot chicken sandwich. I was glad to be riding my bike to help burn some of it off! LOL
After brunch, Paul got a haircut and we ended the afternoon with canalside beers at Oslo Beers, a great spot on the water to watch boats go by. They have picnic tables and even swings hanging from the trees. We opted for two slingback deck chairs on the turf and it was perfect.
Dinner was an old gameday favorite – air fryer chicken wings. Thankfully you can actually find Frank’s wing sauce at the store here. I found these silicone air fryer inserts on Amazon and love them! The only problem with the air fryer is cleaning it, and these babies make it so much easier. The food also cooked as it would have cooked otherwise, so I am sold on them. Such a good find.
