Touring Paris in a Vintage Citroën

Europe, France, Travel / Tuesday, August 10th, 2021

Touring Paris in a vintage Citroën was by far one of the best tours we’ve ever done! Aside from the occasional Uber, we had never seen the city from a car. We are used to taking the metro and walking everywhere, but when you have the chance to see Paris from a convertible car, where the purpose isn’t just transportation but to see the city as a living museum, it just feels different. It’s more romantic and you get a totally new perspective of some of Paris’ most famous landmarks. I felt like we were in our own little movie. If you’re planning a trip to Paris, here are my tips for how you can tour Paris in a vintage Citroën!

Booking Your Tour

There are several companies providing car tours of Paris with different vehicle options. We loved the idea of a vintage Citroën 2CV because it was a French-made car only produced from 1948-1990. I really love old cars so I couldn’t wait! The 2CV stands for “deux chevaux-vapeur” meaning two horsepower. The top rolled back making it into a convertible and it was perfectly cozy for two people plus a driver. It looks a little like a VW Beetle and has been referred to as the most original car since the Ford Model T. The car we had was a Citroën 2CV Cocorico, produced in 1986 to celebrate France’s participation in the 13th FIFA World Cup that took place in Mexico (hence the blue, white, red paint). Only 1,000 were made and they’re highly sought after today.

We booked with My Winedays as part of a package deal with our Champagne day trip (read all about that here). We booked the 2 hour night tour and had a GREAT time with our tour guide. We loved every minute of our time in our little vintage Citroën 2CV!

What to Expect

Your driver will pick you up at your designated location. That could be your hotel or Airbnb. We were picked up from a restaurant. We opted to have a lengthy outdoor dinner before our tour, because we wanted to see Paris as the sun was setting and into the night. When our driver arrived, every head turned! It was pretty amazing to be picked up in this car that is so unique. You’ll get a lot of looks throughout Paris as you cruise by. We enjoyed waving and giving a cheers with our champagne glasses to all the cafe goers we saw. It was the most fun!

Champagne is included! At the start of your tour, your driver will pop a bottle of champagne and fill your glasses. What is it about riding in a convertible with a glass of bubbly that makes it so fun?! When the backdrop is Paris, it’s pretty much heaven. I recommend getting a little dressed up for an even more Parisian experience. 😉

The best part of seeing Paris in a car with a local is that you get access to places you might never find on your own. Our driver Jean was very professional, spoke English but also French because I was practicing, and gave us an incredible private tour. We saw Sacre-Cœur as the sun set behind it, the Eiffel Tower framed amongst lush green trees, the Sorbonne and Pantheon, the Louvre pyramid, and even a night drive down the Champs-Élysées to see the Arc de Triomphe. Every street in Paris is a feast for the eyes, so there were lots of little places to see and appreciate. Our tour ended by the Eiffel Tower where we popped out for night photos on the Pont Alexandre III. Seeing a glittering Eiffel Tower above the Seine was the perfect ending to a perfect night.
