When I first heard the term “glow up” I thought, that is actually a really good representation of how it feels to go through a transformation. Whether it’s working on yourself or in this case, a space in your home, a fresh new look can make a huge difference in your mood.
After our washing machine finally bit the dust, I wanted to give my laundry room a glow up. To be honest, the space didn’t need much. We already have a lot of great storage and it’s configured pretty well. With two gorgeous new machines in there though, the rest of the laundry room looked a bit drab in comparison.
Being that it’s a room I spend a decent amount of time in (you’d be amazed at how much laundry two people can generate), I wanted it to match the rest of our home and feel just as comfortable and inspired in there as anywhere else. I rounded up a few organizational and decor pieces and kept it under $55. That does not include the cost of the new washer and dryer, of course.
Here’s a look at the before:
Not much to see, right? I took this photo from the door and what you can’t see is a lackluster shelf with an old plastic laundry basket and a sink area with a frustrating towel holder. The refrigerator magnets had somehow multiplied and were taking over the fridge. The machines, while they lasted us almost 12 years (thankful for that) had really started to become inefficient (and one died). I did have a nice photo of us and one of Bella on the countertop, but an overflowing bowl of random receipts and coupons really detracted from them. It was just kind of a sad space. I felt like I was some kind of laundry troll shuffling about in my dungeon. Ok, I’m exaggerating a little.
Now let’s see the new and improved laundry room glow up!
Crazy isn’t it? A few small changes can make a huge difference.
Let’s address storage. I found two woven baskets at HomeGoods for that lackluster shelf I mentioned. This set is very similar in look and price. I replaced an old plastic laundry bin with these and I love how it looks, but I also love the convenience of tossing dirty towels and sheets into these for washing. I found a smaller sized matching basket to keep dryer sheets and extra hand towels in.
Tip #1 – Uniformity is key – When considering storage solutions that you will actually see (i.e. not hidden in a cabinet, although I like uniformity there too) make sure your organizational pieces are the same color, size, shape, material so that they look like a set. Matching pieces always elevate a space.
Shop storage baskets:
I replaced the old frustrating towel holder with a simple bronze Command Hook and hung a white and gray striped towel from it. The metal Laundry & Co sign was something I’ve been wanting to add for a while. This one was perfect because it was simple (no “drop your pants here” or “loads of fun” sayings) and the size fit the space. I also knew I wanted something black and white that would pop off the wall.
Tip #2 – Stick to neutral decor – You can always sub in a colorful towel or scented soap for the changing seasons, but a neutral color palette feels calm and collected.
Shop laundry signs:
The soap dish was found while perusing a 90% off Christmas sale. It doesn’t even look like a holiday piece and it was perfect for my favorite goat’s milk soap. I may switch back to a liquid hand soap but lately I’ve been loving the feel of a creamy bar soap.
Tip #3 – Shop holiday and after-holiday sales – Scope the leftover holiday aisles for things that can be used year round. I’ve found pieces that are simply white with no other decoration or holiday insignia for much less than their original price.
Shop soap dishes and towels:
Other things I did to reorganize my laundry room included cleaning out the cabinets and grouping like items together. I used these plastic storage bins with lids to corral tools, cleaning supplies, and household odds and ends. Cleaning cloths and spare towels were folded and grouped together within easy reach. I created a stain removal kit (thanks for this idea, Martha Stewart) by keeping those items together in an open top basket.
Regarding the fridge magnets, I edited them to keep only the ones that I really loved and placed all the photos onto a burlap wrapped bulletin board instead (similar here). The fridge looks clean and modern now.
Receipt:
Laundry & Co Sign – $6.00 (originally $12, on sale 50% off)
3 Woven Storage Baskets – $35.00
Command Hook – $7.00
Two-pack dish towels – $5.00
Soap dish – $1.00 (originally $10, on sale 90% off as it was a Christmas item)
TOTAL: $54.00
I cannot fully express how happy this space makes me feel now. Doing laundry is actually enjoyable! What’s a space in your home you’d like to give a glow up to? Do you like seeing posts like this one?
