I was at an event the other day and someone I was chatting with said, “Your skin looks amazing. Divulge your secrets.” First of all, this never happens to me. People don’t compliment my skin out of the blue, and I don’t think what I do is any real secret. In fact, when I told her what products I’ve been using regularly she was quite surprised.
I haven’t always been on the path to skincare enlightenment, though. It has taken me years to figure out what works and what doesn’t. And with so many products aimed to treat and soothe different aspects of our skin, once you do find a roundup of products that are right for you, it gets a bit confusing on which to apply when. Is there a right or a wrong way? It turns out, there is a proper order to apply your skincare products.
Basically, after cleansing you’ll want to apply your skincare products from least to most viscosity, or thin to thick. You’ll start with lighter products like serums and move to heavier products like moisturizers or creams.
I am no expert in skincare, but after visiting with a dermatologist and endless Internet research, I found out that there is actually a proper order to it all. Here’s the breakdown of what I’m using and the proper order that I’m using it.
I was provided Hydroboost products from RPR via Neutrogena. All opinions are 100% my own. Partnerships like these make Cathedrals & Cafes possible.
1 – Cleanser
Although washing your face should be a no-brainer, I’m always surprised by how many women say they forget to wash their face before bed. I enjoy the process of shedding the day, which includes taking the layers of makeup off, so I always cleanse twice a day. I use a gel cleanser and swap it for a gentle exfoliating cleanser once a week.

2 – Toner
Using a cotton ball I apply alcohol-free toner as the last step of cleansing. If you remember toning in your teen years, it probably wasn’t pleasant. But today’s toners have less astringent properties and actually act to prep your pores so they can better accept your skincare products.

3 – Serum
I always thought of serums as being oily but they aren’t. There’s a difference between a serum and an oil. Serums have a gel-like consistency and can contain a variety of different skin care ingredients. Vitamin C, hyaluronic acid, and collagen are just a few. Serums can definitely range in price, but I find that serums also last me a really long time because of their consistency. I little gel goes a long way.

4 – Eye cream
It’s never too early to start using an eye cream. I wish I had started when I was 20! You may not feel you need a separate eye cream, but I like to dab a little around mine at the end of a long day.
5 – Moisturizer
Even with naturally oily skin, I never forget my moisturizer. One that contains sunscreen for daytime is also a plus. I love keeping my moisturizer chilled. It really helps wake me up in the morning.
Tip: Don’t forget your neck, décolletage, or the backs of your hands. I like to use my serums and moisturizers on these areas as well.
6 – Oils
Oils are intended to help lock all that moisture in that you just applied. Here’s where I’m still a little unsure of the right brand for me. Do you have an oil you currently love? I’ve always stayed away from them because I think my face produces enough of a dewy look on its own. But I’d love a great recommendation, if you have one. I’ve heard that Vintner’s Daughter is amazing but it’s on the pricier side.
7 – Sunscreen
If you use a moisturizer that already contains SPF, then you can skip this last step. Otherwise, lather up!
