Known as “the most exciting two minutes in sports,” The Kentucky Derby is an event that is lots of fun to celebrate. If you’re hosting a Derby party, one of the key pieces to the ambiance is a great cocktail. Tradition calls for the classic Mint Julep. Today I’m sharing a refreshing alternative version. It’s a twist on the race-day ritual that tastes like summer in a glass. With temperatures starting to climb, I love a good glass of lemonade. This recipe combines that sweet and tangy yellow fruit with the smoothness only a good Kentucky bourbon can provide.

What you’ll need:

1.5 ounces of Basil Hayden’s Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey

1.5 ounces fresh lemon juice (keep the rind as garnish and to infuse your simple syrup)

1.5 ounces of lemon-infused simple syrup

1.5 ounces of water

About 10 mint leaves

Prep:

To make simple syrup combine equal parts water and sugar in a saucepan. Add a lemon rind to infuse and heat until dissolved. The mixture should be clear, not cloudy. Remove from heat.

Rub the inside of the glass with the mint leaves and discard. I chose a copper mug simply because it’s pretty, but you can use whatever you have on-hand. A simple mason jar would be really fun. I also used gold paper straws to match the handles of the copper mugs.

In a shaker, combine the first four ingredients and shake with ice. Strain over fresh ice into your glass. Garnish with a mint sprig and lemon rind.

Don your giant hat, sip, and enjoy the “Run for the Roses!”
