I was provided with cosmetic items from the Neutrogena Hydro Boost makeup line. All opinions and reviews in this post are honest, unbiased, and mine.
When it comes to a beauty routine, I’m probably more apt to speak about skincare. I still don’t feel like I’m a wealth of knowledge when it comes to makeup, but I do like to dabble (I enjoy a smokey eye as much as the next girl). One challenge that I’ve worked to perfect, though, is my travel makeup. I’m talking about the beauty routine I do every time I’m traveling, especially when catching a red eye halfway across the globe.
What Makes Travel Makeup Different
My travel makeup routine is different than what I do everyday or for special occasions. I have paired down the products I use to just the essentials. My travel makeup is a faster way to get ready yet still look put together. I don’t always have a lot of time before heading to the airport. But I also don’t like looking as if I’ve just rolled out of bed.
I decided to see how the Neutrogena Hydro Boost makeup line stands up to the travel makeup challenge. The Hydro Boost cleansing gel has become a mainstay in my beauty routine so I was really excited to test the makeup. I love how my skin looks and feels when using products that contain hyaluronic acid (HA), like Hydroboost from Neutrogena. HA is actually a naturally occurring molecule in the body that acts to hydrate and plump the skin. As we age, our bodies produce less HA, so it’s no wonder you see it in a lot of anti-aging products on the market. Even Dr. Oz discussed its benefits on his show recently.
The Products I Use for Travel Makeup
Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Cleansing Gel
Eye Cream – Age-delay Black Tea cream by Fresh
Moisturizer – Olay Regenerist Micro-sculpting Cream
Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer
Hydro Boost Hydrating Lip Treatment
Hydro Boost Hydrating Lip Shine
Eyebrow Gel – Benefit Gimme Brow
Before Applying Makeup
I use the Hydro Boost cleansing gel twice a day to remove all makeup, dirt, and oil. Only a couple of pumps cleans everything off my face and my skin feels hydrated, not stripped afterwards. I like that it’s a cleansing gel so I can transfer the bottle from my counter to the shower easily. I follow this with the alcohol free toner on a cotton ball.
I’ve been using the Hydro Boost lip treatment every night before bed. It’s lightweight and works overnight to moisturize my lips without feeling sticky. I keep it in my bag so that I can re-apply on planes, where hydration is critical.
My Travel Makeup Routine
1 – Eye cream. I use my ring finger to lightly dab the cream under and around my eye area. What I love about the black tea cream from Fresh is that a little goes a loooooong way, which is great considering it’s a bit on the pricey side.
2 – Moisturizer. I’ve been using the Olay Regenerist line for about a year now and really like it. If you’re sensitive to retinoids, then this may not be the best for you. I like that it’s also infused with hyaluronic acid.
Tip: When traveling, I keep my creams, moisturizers, and liquid makeup in contact lens cases. They hold enough to get me through a two week trip and are space saving.
3 – Hydro Boost Hydrating Concealer. I dab this under my eyes and cover any blemish spots. A lot of women like to use a sponge or beauty blender. I use more of the “artist” method and use the tools I was born with – my hands. I feel more in control with a clean finger tip than anything else, but I have used a beauty blender similar to this one with good results.
4 – Hydro Boost Hydrating Tint. I’m still experimenting with this foundation. So far I really like the way it feels. It’s almost dewy-like, which as I get older I prefer (remember those awful matte powder days in the 90’s? Ugh…). It takes me a bit longer to get it to blend, though. But that could be how it’s reacting to my moisturizer, so I’m hesitant to think this is a negative thing about it. The coverage is great and I was able to find two shades that will work for me, one for fall/winter and another for spring/summer. My skin is always a little darker in the warmer months so I like to have a couple of foundation shades to work with. Swatch them on the back of your hand if you’re unsure.
5 – Benefit Gimme Brow eyebrow gel. This is a great volumizing eyebrow gel that is also tinted, so it’s the perfect amount of quick coverage. I cannot say enough great things about this eyebrow gel!
6 – Hydro Boost Plumping Mascara. A few quick strokes is all you need. I like the brush and consistency of this formula. My lashes definitely looked plumped without being clumpy. It comes in a waterproof version as well.
7 – Hydro Boost Hydrating Lip Shine. The applicator tip is a little larger than other brands I’ve tried, but I like its flattened teardrop shape which spreads the color evenly. It feels a bit like the Hydro Boost lip treatment only tinted, so I really like how it feels on my lips.
That is it! I don’t bother with shadows, eyeliner, and contouring on travel days. I find that just using these products achieves a very natural look that I feel confident in leaving the house in. But even though this is my travel makeup routine, I don’t just limit it to travel days. It’s great for days where you just want a natural or minimalist look. Sometimes I just like how my eyes pop with a little mascara.
