Is it just me, or is this week flying by? I can’t believe tomorrow is already Friday and it’ll be a week since we tried Signature, a new restaurant in San Antonio. We had a little Valentine’s celebration at home but also made reservations with some friends for a fun night out. I already know that Signature, inspired by Chef Andrew Weissman (Il Sogno and Le Rêve), is my favorite new spot.
This place is setting a culinary bar for the city. From the moment you enter the grounds you are surrounded by rustic elegance. I felt like it was a little bit French country combined with the Texas Hill Country – relaxed, yet refined in both the ambiance and food.
First, start with a cocktail from one of the talented mixologists at the distressed stainless steel bar. The low-hanging lamps cast off a cozy glow and the wooden beams overhead have that European farmhouse feel. There is a nice energy but it’s not too loud, even with every table filled. There’s just enough buzz in the air for a fun evening ahead.
We were seated next to the stately stone fireplace with views into the exhibition style kitchen. The food was not only delicious, but surprising. I love it when I leave a restaurant having experienced a flavor combination I’ve never had before.
Prior to our meal we were served an amuse-bouche of fresh ricotta with pesto and crostini. That was a fun and unexpected treat you don’t have often. I can’t have an amuse-bouche without thinking of the Friends episode where Chandler says, “Well, it IS amusing!” My husband and I split a bib salad (trust me, they are huge) and then followed with a roasted quail appetizer. I had diver scallops, which were seared perfectly and served with a crispy cauliflower, and my husband had a beef tenderloin that was prepared exactly to temperature. It was gone before I could snap a photo!
Everything was delightful and I honestly can’t find anything negative to say. I am so excited to go back soon!
My new favorite wine right now is the 2011 Papillon by Orin Swift. If you’re in the San Antonio area I highly recommend dining at Signature. Just be sure to make reservations. You don’t want to miss it.
I’m going to do a separate post on my #ootn for this date night, where I managed to shop my closet instead of buying something new. So come back for that soon!
