One of the Christmas traditions that I love most is hanging stockings along the mantel. We even have a stocking for our dog, Bella. As a family grows, it’s fun to see the number of stockings increase. At my in-laws’ house, the entire mantel is covered from end to end with matching red and white stockings monogrammed for each family member. I can remember being a child at my grandparents’ house and excitedly waiting to dive into our hand-knitted stockings. Santa never disappointed, filling our stockings with things like chocolates, small gifts, and even an orange down in the toe representing the legend of St. Nicholas. Opening your stocking was like a preview to the main event later.

Even though we are adults, my mother still enjoys secretly placing gifts into mine and my husband’s stockings. She always remembers treats and toys for Bella, too.

Stockings are the easiest way to inject some fun and whimsy into your gifting. You could even choose a theme for stocking gifts like vintage toys and games or white elephant. Go for something unexpected that the recipient would never choose for themselves and watch their face light up. Leave room in the stocking for Santa’s gifts, too. 😉
