Italian inspired dinner for two

Food and Wine / Monday, April 18th, 2016

After a quick trip to Vegas followed by an intense work travel schedule, it was time for us to reset the batteries and enjoy some time at home. To me there is nothing better than a fun home cooked meal with good wine and great company. Usually it’s my husband who cooks up a masterpiece but I decided to surprise him with my own efforts in the kitchen. Well, mostly my own. The main course required grilling and I just haven’t approached that yet. Luckily he doesn’t mind lending a hand. But I wanted to do everything else myself and go a little outside the box.

We are just a few short months away from being back in Italy so I thought a fun Italian inspired meal would be the perfect reward for two busy people. Here’s the menu I put together:

First – Prosciutto and ricotta crostini with arugula and honey

Second – Caprese Salad

Main – Prime New York strip steak with whole roasted rustic carrots

Sweet – Affogatto

With the crostini I thought an Italian prosecco would be the best pairing. Who doesn’t love a little bubbly? It always feels like you’re celebrating something. Plus it’s a great palette cleanser and really balances the saltiness of the prosciutto and sweetness of the ricotta and honey. I found Santi Nello Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco Superiore at my local Total Wine shop for around $12. It was fantastico! I thought I’d share a few pictures of some of the yummy food. Unfortunately we gobbled up our affogatto desserts before I could snap a picture! If you haven’t had an affogatto before you can easily make this elegant dessert at home. Just top one scoop of vanilla gelato with a shot of espresso and fresh whipped creme. That’s it! And its amazing.

Just looking back at the pictures has me dreaming of La Dolce Vita! Next time I promise to take more photos, but this was my first go at it. Also, it was a dark and stormy evening so good lighting was a challenge. Nevertheless I hope I’ve inspired you. Have a great week!
