Tips to Minimize Your Summer Wardrobe for Europe Travel

Fashion, Travel / Friday, July 19th, 2019

I’ve addressed travel wardrobe challenges a few times on here (most recently with my Croatia Packing List post), but I received a few DM’s on Instagram asking specific questions about my summer wardrobe when Europe’s weather can be pretty varied during the summer. Things like, Do I need a jacket or is a sweater ok? … and, What kind of sandal can I wear that won’t kill my feet by the end of the day? … and, How do you decide how many “nice” outfits to bring?

In spite of an unusually timed heat wave making its way across Europe, the Balkans can typically be pretty warm during late June-July. Think 80 to 90 degrees F under normal conditions. Compare that to last year around the same time, Scandinavia was in the low 50’s at night and mid 70’s during the day. We had sweaters on and it was amazing! You can see exactly what I wore in Scandinavia in this post.

So, if you’re planning on making your way across the pond, it’s a good idea to understand what kind of weather patterns you might expect before deciding on your summer wardrobe.

I’ve shared a lot about the specific pieces that I packed, but I wanted today’s post to be more of a general list of guidelines. This list will help you (1) be prepared, (2) lighten your suitcase, (3) help you blend in, and (4) keep you comfortable.

Tips to minimize your summer wardrobe for Europe travel:

Choose lightweight wardrobe options

I wear dresses more in Europe than anywhere else. Not only are summer dresses lightweight, they make dressing faster and easier. You’ll never miss a train when you can just throw on a dress and go. I also like that dresses prepare me for entering into churches and make good transitional pieces for day to night.

Why does a lightweight suitcase matter? Europe is full of cobblestone streets and uneven narrow sidewalks. Lugging a heavy bag over them is not only very uncomfortable but the loud noise you’re making screams, I’m American. Many of the apartment buildings do not have elevators, so be prepared to carry your bags up multiple flights of stairs. This is not usually a problem when staying in a hotel, but be prepared for really small elevators. Many times my husband and I cannot ride the elevator together with our bags. So small and lightweight is very beneficial.

Don’t overthink it

Wardrobe items you’ll only wear once and lots of accessories should be a hard pass. If you have to overthink about how you’ll incorporate it into multiple days of wear, it needs to stay at home. I know, I know… those amazing heels would look so cute for that ONE nice dinner you’re having. Trust me, you have another option in your closet that will look just as nice that you can also wear during the day for several days.

Consider outerwear carefully

Unless it’s going to be in the 50’s or below the entire time, a lightweight sweater and pashmina will do. I bring one neutral toned scarf with me and one sweater for layering. This summer, I only brought the scarf, which I wore everyday in Ljubljana.

Don’t forget your feet

I love a good sneaker, but I don’t want to be in a dress and a pair of Nikes in my pictures. One of the best pairs of sandals I’ve found for doing a lot of walking are these Birkenstocks. They go with everything and provide support and traction. I’ve never had a blister or experienced any discomfort.

On days where walking might be minimal or we’re just walking around Old Town, I like to wear a more stylish pair like these tan and gold strappy sandals.

My thoughts on casual v. “nice” outfits

Here’s the thing…unless you’re eating at a Michelin star restaurant with a strict dress code, pretty much anything goes. That doesn’t mean go to a nice restaurant in your bathing suit, cut offs and rubber flip-flops. But a “nice” outfit for a more dressed up evening means transitioning that sundress with a pair of stylish sandals, adding some statement earrings, and a nice purse. I bring something for each dinner we have a reservation for, which typically means one reservation in each major city. Think casual elegance over fussy and you’ll fit right in with Europe’s cafe culture (and leave more room in your suitcase for souvenirs…or wine). 😉
