Paris is my favorite European city and I’m so happy to be returning for a third time. The Seine, those baguettes, French wine, ooh la la…(I’ve never heard an actual French person say ooh la la, by the way). I find inspiration in all things Parisian, but one thing I’m always studying is what Parisian women are wearing. I love how effortlessly chic they look and their “less is more” approach to style. Packing for Paris in winter can present a bit of a challenge to this – how does one look chic yet stay warm and comfortable? Because I plan on staying out as long as I can and seeing as much of the city I love as possible.
Over the years I’ve developed a bit of a capsule wardrobe for travel to some of Europe’s colder cities at this time of year (London, Switzerland, etc.). Several of my readers have asked what I’m bringing to Paris because they are planning their own winter trips. I have some basics that I pack every time that I mix with a few new pieces to keep it fresh.
Packing for Paris in Winter shouldn’t give you anxiety. Instead, think practically and efficiently. Choose pieces in neutral palettes that can be mixed and matched. I tend to wear a lot of black, white, and beige. This year I’m throwing in a couple pops of color with a merlot shoulder bag and a berry colored sweater. I’m not dressing for a fashion show, but it is totally doable to be comfortable as well as stylish.
Here’s what I’m packing for Paris in winter…
TOPS
I like to pack a selection of light to medium weight sweaters that I can layer a cami under or wear by themselves. Make sure your sweaters aren’t too sheer or the wind will go right through. I avoid really bulky sweaters so that I don’t feel too stuffed into my coat. I found this cute crew neck sweater in a few different colors and it’s perfect. I also like to pack a couple long tunic shirts. They work great for layering.
BOTTOMS
Even though the weather can be cold, I’m most comfortable in a pair of leggings under my sweater. Fleece lined leggings offer added warmth. To avoid being too boring, I like leggings with a little detail like this pair with a faux leather stripe and this pair with suede accents.
SHOES
I pack three pairs of shoes, maybe four if there’s something specific we have planned (like a really nice dinner). Ankle boots are my best friend, because they’re perfect for lots of daytime walking and they transition into evenings without looking sloppy or too casual. I vary it up with a pair of knee high leather boots. I bought these black leather boots last year and I’m so glad they’re back this season.
OUTERWEAR
Full disclosure…I love coats. This year I invested in this camel wool coat because camel goes with everything, whether you’re wearing brown, black, or blue. Any color works, really. I’m also packing a lighter weight puffy coat that is still really insulating. This puffy jacket rolls up easily into your suitcase.
ACCESSORIES
I always travel with a blanket scarf in the colder months. Gloves are also a good idea when you’re going to be spending a lot of time outside. I also picked up an inexpensive furry pom pom beanie that keeps me warm and looks cute. I’m also packing a cross-body bag to be handsfree as well as a carryon tote.
