These scripted sun hats are everywhere right now and they’re a fun way to add a little humor or attitude to your summer attire. They say things like “Wish You Were Here” or “Out of Office.” Since I already had a sun hat I decided to make my own. I bought my hat from J. Crew a few seasons ago and I wanted the option to remove the wording after the trend has faded or change up the wording on a whim.
I decided on the phrase “Rosé all day” because as anyone who knows me will tell you, I’m kind of a fan. Ok more than a fan. Alright, fine, I’m obsessed with rosé wines. It’s just that to me, rosé tastes like a glass of summertime and carefree living. The kind of wine that’s perfect for patios and swimming pools, the two places I can be found just about every weekend.
You don’t need any fancy tools or skills. This DIY is incredibly easy. Just allow yourself about an hour from start to finish, depending on how intricate your wording.
What you’ll need:
+ A sun hat
+ 5-6 yards lightweight cording or sequin trim in the color of your choice (from any craft or fabric store)
+ Hot glue (permanent) or removable glue dots (if you’re like me and will want to change it up)
+ White chalk
What you’ll do:
Try on your sun hat and decide where you want to start your phrase and which side. Use your chalk to write your phrase. If you make a mistake just wipe away the chalk with a damp towel. I went with a cursive style I’ve seen online.
Start laying your cording or sequin trim along your chalk lines and place a glue dot underneath (or use your glue gun for a permanent look). Press firmly as you work your way around. I found these glue dots at Hobby Lobby and they are strong enough to keep everything in place but I’ll easily be able to peel it off at some point. Cut your trim as needed while you work and secure with a glue dot on the ends.
That’s it! You have a fun scripted sun hat to show off to your friends! This would make a great personalized gift or a fun bachelorette party favor. Or grab your girlfriends for a DIY party – don’t forget the rosé!
I’ve “paired” this hat with one of my favorite “go-to” French rosés – H to H “Homage to Heritage” Cotes du Rhone. It’s light, easy, slightly fruity but not overwhelmingly so, and affordable. I usually stock up for summer.
